WA news LIVE: Who will become WA’s opposition party?

Who will be the official opposition party in Western Australia is still up in the air this morning, with the Liberal and National parties both claiming six seats in the lower house so far following the state election on March 8.

The only remaining seat yet to be called is Kalamunda, which at last count two hours ago had Liberal candidate Adam Hort ahead by the narrowest of margins, just 131 votes.

If the Liberals claim that seat, it’s expected newly elected Churchlands member Basil Zempilas will become the leader of the Liberal party and the opposition leader.

“My sense is I will be the only candidate [for the Liberal leadership],” he said on Friday.

If Labor claims Kalamunda and both parties remain on six seats, the official position of opposition leader will be up in the air, with the parties having to negotiate.
