A 13-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a Coles worker before fleeing the scene on Monday afternoon.

The teenager went into the supermarket at Yamanto Central, south-west of Brisbane, about 5.20pm, where he stabbed a 63-year-old female worker with a knife, police said.

Police will allege he then fled the scene, before being caught by members of the public.

Attending officers rendered first aid to the woman, who remains in a critical condition in the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

The teenager is expected to appear in Ipswich Childrens Court on Tuesday on one count of attempted murder.

Police were expected to provide an update later on Tuesday.
