AFL 2025 round one LIVE: Dons fans livid over free kicks as ‘The Wizard’ weaves his magic

HT: Hawthorn lead 10.4 (64) to Essendon 4.5 (29)
For about five minutes, it looked like we had a ball game – and then Hawthorn flexed their muscle to re-stamp their authority.
The Hawks look a class above the Bombers – they’re slick and more skilful. They have fewer weak links in their side. Nine of the top 12 ball-winners are in brown and gold.

I’ve loved Karl Amon’s game so far. His run and precise kicking is a real weapon.
Nick Watson has rebounded strongly after a poor game last week, booting three goals. He’s been a livewire in the air, on the ground, with the ball and without.
The defence of James Sicily, Josh Battle and Tom Barrass is proving hard for the Bombers to break down. Their only advantage in this game has been at the stoppages, which they’re winning 26-14, but they’re not getting much reward on the scoreboard.
Zach Merrett has been good but not dominant, Andrew McGrath has been steady, Jye Caldwell has battled hard, and Sam Draper has had a crack, but there’s not much else to write home about. Ben McKay went through the first half without a disposal despite spending the entire game on the field. McKay was one of the Bombers’ best interceptors last year.
